Handing over your SIM card to someone else, even unknowingly, can land you in serious trouble. The Department of Telecommunications has issued a strict advisory warning users against this. Violating these regulations could lead to imprisonment for up to three years and a hefty fine of up to Rs 50 lakh.
Your Responsibility Under the New Telecom Law
As per the latest telecom regulations, any fraudulent activity or illegal actions carried out using your SIM card will be considered your responsibility. If a crime is committed using your number, you could be held accountable.
Additionally, obtaining a SIM card using fake documents or under someone else’s name is a punishable offense. Cybercriminals often exploit these loopholes by committing crimes while concealing their IP addresses.
Beware of Number Masking and Fake Calls
Creating and using a phone number through third-party apps to make calls is illegal. Moreover, deliberately hiding your caller ID is also considered a crime under the law. Such offenses are categorized as non-bailable, meaning you may face imprisonment for up to three years along with a fine of Rs 50 lakh if found guilty.
Is Someone Else Using Your SIM Card? Be Cautious!
Given the stringent rules, it is now more crucial than ever to use your SIM card responsibly. Always ensure that your number is secure and not being misused by others. Stay informed and avoid sharing your SIM card to prevent legal complications and financial losses.
